CURLY HAIRED ME: MAINTAINING SHORT LOCKS

the-pink-joy-curly-hair-power-couple-products-1-jpg

As I am my own hairstylist (yes, you heard right. I cut and style me own hair myself :)) , one of the most asked about questions I get is “how I maintain my short hair?”. Some assume that having short hair = no maintenance. Well, from my experience, there is nothing like a no maintenance hair style. Even if you are bald, you will still need to put in some effort towards hair maintenance. For me, a huge part of maintaining my short hair is keeping it soft and curly.

For those who thought I was naturally born with these soft curls, so sorry to disappoint you :). My soft curly locks don’t come without effort, but with the help of the right products. With curls, it is important to use products that not only add luster and moisture back to hair, but also gives hair that soft, thick yet easy-to-comb/easy-to-run-your-fingers-through texture. Over the years, I have played around with tons and tons of hair products, and lots of them just made my hair look greasy on the outside instead of well hydrated on the inside. But never have I found 2 products that work so perfectly at maintaining my curls like these products below. I can truly say that after much experimenting with hair products, I have finally found the ideal power couple for my curls….

Introducing Soft & Beautiful Botanicals Texturizer and Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner

#1: Soft & Beautiful Botanicals Texturizer Kit:  I cut my own hair approximately every 6-8 weeks. After which,  I use this texturizer on my hair. It’s mild formulation helps to enhance and loosen my natural wave and curl, without damaging my hair. If you don’t have curly hair, this will probably straighten instead of enhance the natural curl of your hair. So please, make sure you know your hair type before using this product. Also, this kit is very easy and convenient to use, so just follow the instructions in the pack.

#2: Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner: I am so hooked on this product. I literally use it daily after wetting my hair. Okay, even though I am 100% Nigerian with no trace of mixed genes, this product still works wonders for me. It makes my curls so soft and healthy looking, without leaving any residue or grease behind. And it smells oh-so delicious. I even use it on my baby girl’s hair too. She has very thick hair too, and it’s really made her hair super manageable.

There you go! My “can’t live without” hair staples for a Curly Haired ME……

Does wetting your hair daily or rinsing with conditioner daily affect how long the texturizer lasts and health of hair???

Awww sure, I would be happy to help. Every morning, I wet my hair and use Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner and allow my hair to air dry on it’s own. What do you use daily on your hair?

When you say that you wet your hair daily, do you mean that you are co-washing everyday, using a water-based leave in conditioner everyday, or are you simply dampening your hair with water every morning? Thank you!

I am in love with your hair and I’m trying to get mine like yours. My hair is straight but my roots are wavy, would the texturizer work on my hair?

Awwww thanks so much dear. For the texturizer to work on your hair, you will need to cut off the straight part of your hair. Texturizer works best on wavy or curly hair or hair roots. Hope that helps. Definitely let me know if you have any other questions :)

How long did you leave the texturizer in your hair? Ihave very curly hair about 3 inches long and would like to just loosen up the curl.

Hi Lilly, I usually leave the texturizer on my hair for about 15 mins, which includes application time. My hair is really thick, that’s why I leave it in that long. Hope that helps. Definitely let me know how it turns out and if you have any more questions. Thanks for stopping by.

    Hello Joy,

After texturizing my hair and using the mixed chucks leave in conditioner, can I still use jack five activator gel on my hair. Also does pouring water daily affects the period the texturised will stay on hair. Cheers

I know this thread is a few years old but I would like to know your process on exactly how you apply? I hope I’m not asking to much. I’m Nigerian like you and my hair is 4Z (lol) and is VERY THICK AND CURLY

Oh no, you are not asking too much at all :) Thanks so much for the question. You actually inspired my most recent post. I give more detail on how I apply the products. For the texturizer/relaxer, I use a peak comb and comb through my hair as I apply it. But I rinse and wash it off almost immediately, so it doesn’t straighten my hair. I just use the texturizer/relaxer to loosen my curls. And that, I apply use my daily conditioning products. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Just wondering, how do you go about reapplying your texturizer? They say you shouldn’t put a texturizer over already processed hair, so do you just re-cut it and reapply the texturizer on virgin hair?

Yes, I re-cut it and reapply texturizer to my virgin hair. I make sure I cut off my processed hair before reapplying to my new growth. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions
