I received a question recently on how I make my short thick hair curly, and I was inspired to write this post. I know it’s been a while since I wrote my hair care routine post (read here). But I must say, quite a number of things have changed in my routine since I last wrote it. For instance, I now use henna every 4 weeks, which has made my hair grow faster than ever before. As a result, I cut my hair more often, typically every 3-4 weeks. And as I have mentioned in my prior post, I do cut my hair myself, and always ensure that only my new growth is left before I ever begin with my curling process. So I start by cutting my hair into short locks, then I follow the below steps and products to make my short thick hair curly.
1-Dark & Lovely Healthy Gloss 5 Shea Moisture No Lye Relaxer: To texturize my hair, I now use this No Lye Relaxer by Dark & Lovely and apply it using a peak comb, which I use to comb the product through my hair as I apply it. The only key difference is that as soon as I put the relaxer on my hair, I rinse it off almost immediately. I never allow the relaxer to remain on my hair longer than the application time, which in my case is 5-10 mins tops. I only use the relaxer to loose my natural curls and not to straighten it. This is easy to do, because my hair is super low at this stage.
2- Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner: After I am done washing and conditioning my hair with the neutralizer shampoo and conditioner items in the relaxer kit, I nourish my hair with my favorite leave-in conditioner, Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner. I have used this product for ages now, and I am still obsessed with it. I find that it makes my super thick hair fluffy and curly, leaving me with baby soft hair. I also use this product for my daily hair maintenance. Every morning, I rinse my hair with just water and I use this conditioner afterwards.
3- Care Free Curl Gold Instant Activator: Don’t be alarmed! This activator isn’t like the greasy activators depicted in the Coming To America movie :). Totally not your typical eighties oily activator at all. This activator is super moisturizing and doesn’t leave hair drenched in oil. It smells really good, while giving hair a superb luster and sheen that I absolutely love. I also use this every morning, after applying my Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner. These are the only 2 products I use for my daily maintenance.
That’s all folks. Here are the products I use to curl my short thick hair. I also think my hair has gotten much softer ever since I started using henna on it (read here).
Let me know if you have any questions on my hair maintenance.
Enjoy life joyously & deliciously,
